www.culdesac.es How to cook a chair?22.07. - 28.07.2007 |
The idea was: how to cook a chair? Everybody was given the same ingredient: a wooden chair with a straw seat. It had been chosen by Cul de Sac because of it being the national basic Spanish chair. "Cooking a chair", this is far from being an everyday design brief. The chair should go from basic substance to spicy meal creating a tasty aesthetic experience, which would end up in ashes at the end of the week. Having used the components of the chair only, the results of the "cooking" process had to be so radically different from the original ingredients that the chair itself should not be recognisable.
To start with their task, the participants collected ideas, started sketching and discussing their recipes with Cul de Sac. The workshops became kitchen where the chairs were successfully pasted, coated, sprayed or even burnt in an attempt to alter the objects as much as possible without changing their original function. To finish the week, the Spanish designers decided to vote for the best project and burn the others. An unusual way to part with pieces that had asked for a lot of work, but it was taken as a way to make them gain a kind of eternal status in the memories of the people witnessing this warming pyre.
