Light catchers

Every morning of the 5 days of the workshop, a new subject, playing a significant role in the discussion about light, was introduced by Ulrike Brandi. It was being discussed on the basis of pictures or calculations. Monday: the moon - Tuesday: reflection - Wednesday: emotions - Thursday: extreme - Friday: the sun

On the first day, after the introduction of the subject and the materials assigned, the participants had to make their first object. During the late afternoon, the objects, which were still work in progress, were presented in the sunlight. To realise what would be the influence of the nightlight on these creations, everyone patiently waited for the full moon to appear and late after midnight, the participants had a chance to examine how the moonlight could affect what it was illuminating.

During the next day, groups split up according to the subjects and created one object. A large amount of materials was available such as LED's, foils, mike prisms foil, reflector tins and different light-scattering fabrics. A walk was organised during daylight and at night everyday, for the different groups to show their ideas.

Strange and magic pieces were created exploiting the sun as well as the moon: a reflecting system was set up so the sunlight hitting mirrors would end up in a blast of light stains on the walls of one of the dark ancient rooms of the property and a ladder gleaming under the nightlight was built in the 100 year old cedar as if trying to reach the stars. One of the groups found inspiration in the morning dewdrops glittering in the early sunshine and other objects floating on the lake were capturing the reflections of the light playing with the ripples of the water.

Als ich mich damals, vor bald 20 Jahren, vom Industriedesign her kommend auf die Lichtplanung festlegte, dachte ich: Nur das, ein ganzes Leben lang? Heute bin ich überzeugt, dass ein Leben nicht genug ist, alle Möglichkeiten darin auszuschöpfen.

Ulrike Brandi wurde 1957 geboren. Nach dem Studium der Romanistik in Hamburg, begann sie 1984 Design zu studieren. Vier Jahre später erhielt sie ihr Diplom an der Hochschule für bildende Künste, Hamburg. 1987 gründete sie das Büro „Ulrike Brandi Licht“, das bis heute über 300 Projekte im In- und Ausland umgesetzt hat. Nebst Bereichen, wo Lichtplaner schon seit Langem hinzugezogen werden, wie bei der Gestaltung von Museen oder Kaufhäusern, deckt Ulrike Brandi nun auch die Lichtplanung von Masterplänen und vom öffentlichen Raum ab. So zählen zu ihren beispielhaften Projekten das British Museum in London, das Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, die White City Mall in London, die Rathausfassade in Hamburg, die Innenstadt in Bremen, die EXPO 2000 oder der Flughafen Pudong 2 in Shanghai.
Seit 1990 leitet Ulrike Brandi Workshops und hält Vorträge. Sie hatte einen Lehrauftrag an der FH Düsseldorf und lehrte von 1998-1999 als Gastprofessorin an der HbK Braunschweig. Ihre Arbeit wurde in zahlreichen Zeitschriften behandelt und sie hat viele Artikel und Bücher veröffentlicht. 2002 war sie verantwortlich für die Konzeption und Realisation der Ausstellung „Licht und Schatten“ im Deutschen Architektur Museum.
