Humberto and Fernando Campana started their workshop with a sharp glance and a malicious smile. "We are not here to judge." They say with that Brazilian accent which brought a note of exotism in the very short briefing of this first workshop day at Boisbuchet. No need to elaborate for hours, the idea is simple: the project of today is to reinvent small everyday objects such as cutlery or glasses. There will be three different projects during the week, starting with small objects the first day, continuing with lamps the second and ending with a chair. Bags and bags of plastic containers have been previously prepared for the participants.

The plastic is chopped with ban saws and stuck with hot glue to the point where the original recycled objects can not be recognized anymore in the new extraordinary creations that come out of that process.

"Beautiful places in the world become plastic, and this should really change", regret the two brothers for who the aim of the workshop is to reinvent nature out of plastic leftovers.

Along the workshop, the Campanas, give advice on how to explore the potential of plastic and how to develop ideas by using the materials in a more complex way. On the evening of Tuesday the lamps created during the day are presented in the workshops. Some participants had produced chandeliers out of water bottles and some had used natural material to create a contrast with the plastic.

By Friday the barn was arranged like a design store where the presentations took place and were dealt with promptly so participants could go and enjoy a night by the fire.

Die Brüder Fernando (1961) und Humberto (1953) Campana sind zwei der bekanntesten Designer Südamerikas. Eigentlich kamen sie eher zufällig zum Design: Fernando hat Architektur, Humberto Jura studiert. Seit 1983 arbeiten sie jedoch zusammen im gemeinsamen Atelier in São Paolo und entwickeln Möbel, die im Bereich zwischen Design und Kunst angesiedelt sind. Fernando und Humberto Campana entnehmen ihre Ideen oft dem brasilianischen Strassenleben: Es entstehen ungewöhnliche Möbel, die häufig auf alltäglichen Fertigmaterialien, wie Abfallprodukte oder industrielle Güter aufbauen, und trotzdem ästhetisch und funktionell sind. Das Material steht im Zentrum ihrer Praxis und ist oft Ausgangspunkt für neue Formen. So sehen die Gebrüder Campana die Herausforderung darin, etwas Ärmliches in etwas Dekadentes und Luxuriöses zu verwandeln. 1989 erstaunten sie die Öffentlichkeit mit ihrer Kollektion aus Metallmöbel „The Uncomfortables“. Seither sind Möbelskulpturen ein wichtiger Trend in Brasilien geworden. Eine ihrer einfallsreichsten Kreationen ist der Anemone-Sessel, aus Plastikschläuchen geformt, die sich um eine Stahlkonstruktion winden. Zwischen 1996 und 2004 leiten sie regelmässig Workshops, nicht nur in Brasilien, sondern auch in Boisbuchet, in Miami und an der ECAL in Lausanne. Ihre Arbeiten wurden an zahlreichen Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen gezeigt. An der IMM Cologne 2004 wurden sie eingeladen, ein „Ideal House“ zu entwerfen. Sie sind mit zahlreichen, v.a. nationalen, Preisen ausgezeichnet worden. Ihre Kreationen befinden sich in mehreren prominenten Museen und Institutionen, wie das MoMa, New York, das Vitra Design Museum, Deutschland, das Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Israel oder das Kunstmuseum in Montreal, Kanada. Zu ihren Kunden zählen u.a. Edra, OLuce, Cappellini und Fontana Art.
