Creation is serious play Design

Conception is base of every design process. The goal of the workshop “Creation is a Serious Play” by the Indian designer Satyendra Pakhalé was to find different approaches of creation. Often design students and even professional designers start to think about the final piece already at the conception stage. So Pakhalé wanted the participants to focus on the material instead of the design object. Therefore on the first day the participants were asked to walk around the area and look for patterns or structures they were attracted by. The task was to play with the material – as children usually do it – by changing structures, shapes and sizes as well as combining them with materials from the workshop. They then built small mock-ups. Participants with similar ideas were asked to join a group to work on a collaborative project. As the projects had to be realized within a short time, they were forced to simplify their projects and come back to their original ideas.
