Portable and Flexible - and its Architecture

20.07. - 26.07. 2008
Portable architecture has an extensive tradition in the history of human beings. For more than 120,000 years mankind lived nomadic. In the last 10,000 years – as mankind settled down – fixed and permanent architecture replaced mobile shelters. Nowadays, portable and flexible architecture becomes even more important – as requirements of sustainability and economics are changing. The task of the workshop “Portable and Flexible – and its Architecture” by Robert Kronenburg created a self-contained building with changing functions and shapes and which is easy to transport. Meeting the increasing demands of sound environmental architecture, the workshop participants used mainly natural materials, such as textiles and bamboo for their projects. Instead of sketching the architecture of their projects, the participants were asked to make three-dimensional mockups of their full size objects. Like this, they were able to tackle the challenges of construction ab initio and correct the model. After the second day the participants started to build their full-size object. In daily group meetings, the group shared their experiences and talked about boundaries of structural engineering and design.
