more detailed information will follow soon Maarten Baas (NL)Dutch designer Maarten Baas was born on 19 February 1978 in Arnsberg (Germany). After graduating from high school, he began his studies at Design Academy Eindhoven in 1996. Still in school, his first design, the “Knuckle” candleholder, was put into production by Pol’s Potten. In June 2002, he graduated from the Design Academy with two designs: a series of burnt furniture, “Smoke”, and an ingenious sundial. Smoke established Baas at the forefront of the fashionable expressionist design style. By artfully burning existing furniture, Baas questions our perceptions of the beauty and value of objects. He has ticked the same boxes with the new projects he has made since Smoke, such as the surreally naïve Clay furniture, which was a hit of last year’s Milan Furniture Fair. In 2005 he initiated his collaboration with Bas den Herder, who took on responsibility for the production of all pieces. The foundation of studio Baas & den Herder made it possible to manufacture Maarten’s unique pieces on a larger scale, but still all made by hand in Holland. Assignments came from hotels, restaurants, galleries and museums all over the world. Maarten Baas lives and works in Eindhoven. Here he produces his handmade furniture and develops new designs. |
