Sakane Project

The city of Oda (Shimane Prefecture, Japan) and Mr. Hayashi are donating a traditional Japanese wooden house for Boisbuchet. Originally serving as a guest house (kyakuden), the 52 m2 building is set to be transferred to France. In reconstructing the building, experienced Japanese carpenters will pass on their know-how to European students, architects, designers and artisans.

The so-called Minka houses still attest to the masterly abilities of Japanese craftsmen and their centuries-old architectural techniques. Up through the mid-20th century, these structures constituted the standard housing for the average Japanese citizen. A wooden frame serves as the load-bearing structure for the walls done in clay plaster and a thatched or tiled roof. Metal fastenings such as nails, screws or plate are not utilised. Connections are secured exclusively with wooden bolts. This mode of construction is relatively earthquake-resistant and allows the structure to be rebuilt quickly in case of damage.

By May 2008, the kyakuden from Oda in the Shimane Prefecture will be reconstruced at Boisbuchet. After its completion, the building will house exhibitions on traditional Japanese architecture, handicraft, design and photography. The translocation of two additional Minka houses is planned for the future.
