The past, the present, and the future influence our needs every day, but what fuels our desires? For one week at Boisbuchet, designer-researchers Tal Lancman and Mauricio Galante led participants in an intense exploration of a realistic premise: the needs and desires of existing persons. Before arriving at Boisbuchet, each group member was asked to research an individual, documenting their life by means of camera, film, audio, or interview. The results were presented on the first day. The lives of film directors, architects, photographers were laid out in front of this small group as dicussion began. Lancman and Galante urged participants to identify two or three keywords that described their subjects. “Simplify, simplify, simplfy,” they repeated. Values, opinions, desires and idiosincracies of the subject were explored as each participant struggled to define the exact need that would fuel their design process.

Galante and Lancman challenged the group to look beyond normal expectations and explore the unique, personal traits of each subject. Once fully defined, each case study was positioned in the marketplace. How did this portrait fit into the real world? Could the product developed for this individual be applied to a larger sphere? Communication and presentation were emphasized as the group continued to discuss the work late into Thursday evening.

For final step of the project each participant presented a cohesive package: the characteristics of their subject, the conceptual customized product, and the reasoning behind it. A week of reflection, exploration, and creation revealed concepts that touched on everything from portable leisure to lipstick, each a fruit of intense mental labor appreciated by all!
