Unlearning

“We must learn to unlearn.” With this mantra, the husband/wife team of El Ultimo Grito encouraged participants to look beyond the expected and investigate the pure, simple solutions of design.

Exercises such as the “Little Man” pushed the group to define new definitions of space. Each participant was given a series of 10 identical square cards, each with the same “Little Man” placed in the center. The assignment? Create a new space for the man. Everything from the physiological to the concrete was explored as the group worked furiously to meet the afternoon deadline. The results were received enthusiastically in the evening as discussion continued late into the night.

The final project brief built on this initial exercise as Roberto and Rosario asked participants to let go of “accepted” notions and discover new definitions of experience. Students explored themes such as vision, sanctuary, and travel. Work continued late into Thursday night as the group assembled their projects for final presentation late Friday afternoon. The results encouraged all to explore not only new experiences in the physical landscape, but within themselves as well.
