Our senses are ignored as work, duties, and technology take over. For one week at Boisbuchet, designer Arik Levy and choreographer Philippe Blanchard worked with participants to re-discover their senses and themselves. “Feel before you see,” Levy urged his students as they joined together every morning and afternoon to practice sensorial exercises led by Philippe. Focusing on sound and touch, the group learned to isolate their senses and detach themselves from the visual constraints of everyday life. Simultaneously, the group began work on their personal “instruments” as they explored various sounds produced by the Boisbuchet environment and themselves. Themes such as breath, silence, and water were investigated in conjunction with materials of metal, glass, and plaster. Final performances were held Friday afternoon to a rapt audience. Eyes closed, all held their breath as the music began…not one could deny the feelings that emerged from the sounds. From fear to love, each instrument struck a chord within the audience, reminding them to stop, listen, and feel before seeing. |
