"It all works together or it doesn't work at all"

September 10th – 16th 2017

The Tutor

Thomas Lommée (*1979) is the founder of Intrastructures, a pragmatic, utopian design-studio that applies product-, service- and system-design as tools for change. He is also the initiator of the OpenStructures project: a hands-on design experiment that explores the possibility of a modular construction model where everyone designs for everyone on the basis of one shared geometrical grid. Next to his activities as designer / design researcher, Lommée has been teaching at the Social Design research program at Design Academy Eindhoven’s master course and is co-founder and mentor of the 'ENSCImatique' at the ENSCI in Paris. He lives and works in Brussels.

"It all works together or it doesn't work at all"
September 10th – 16th

The Workshop

The OS (OpenStructures) project explores the possibility of an open modular construction model where everyone designs for everyone on the basis of one shared geometrical grid.

The workshop assignment is simple:
Design and build a modular object of which at least one (modular) part is also used in the design of a fellow participant.
In order to facilitate interchangeability, all participants will be asked to design their (modular) part(s) within the OpenStructures design framework (for more info: see links below). Throughout the workshop a selection of existing (OS) modular designs will be available for all workshop participants to puzzle and play with. This will allow them to fully explore the OS project and / or build further on the work of previous OS contributors by integrating new derivatives (reproductions, hacks and adaptions) of existing parts in their final designs.
The OS workshop offers a creative exercise in the open modular design and systems thinking. Requirements for all applicants are basic design skills (knowing how to handle 2D and 3D software) and a love for making (knowing how to work with wood, metal and basic CNC machines such as simple 3D printers and / or laser-cutters).
