Winners of the Boisbuchet Residency Awards 2020

Over the past week-end, the jury of Boisbuchet’s Residency Award – Isabelle de Ponfilly, directrice of Vitra France, Tul Chompaisal, director of PHKA Studio in Bangkok, Mathias Schwartz-Clauss, artistic director of Domaine de Boisbuchet and Alexander von Vegesack, founder of the Domaine de Boisbuchet (president of the jury)– made up its mind and selected five different projects as this competition’s winners.

Congratulations to the winners! And thank you all for your submissions.  Now is the time to develop your projects at Boisbuchet.

“Air interactive devices” by Charlotte Goffette

What is the role of the imaginary and the sensitive in our understanding of the atmospheric phenomenon? How can devices designed to interact with the wind, through their technical and poetic dimensions, illustrate the inexhaustible energy of air movements?
Like a story builder, I develop preparatory drawings mixing reveries, fictional narrative and sensitivity. They serve me as a tool to represent my ideas, to express myself and to physically materialize things. The drawn shapes are constantly changing according to random circumstances. The idea being that the real and imaginary wander together when given the opportunity.
I propose to make devices interacting with the breath of air.

“Le tissu d’un lieu” by Marion Madrange

The fabric is created by the color, the pattern and the random principle of the dye. A series of samples would predict which plants or minerals to use. Once selected, we come to compose our fabric in the most suitable way possible. This fabric when used then creates a bridge between habitat and nature.
Thus, this competition would allow me to create the Boisbuchet fabric!

“Roots Variations” by Aurelia Noudelmann

The urgency to recompose our listening and exchange devices with our environment has guided my research to an interactive installation where the main players are plant bodies.
Through a program carried out on Arduino, the vibrations of their roots are translated into MIDI notes, generating a variable sound composition in space. The installation offers a soundscape based on different dialectics, both opposite and intertwined: indoor-outdoor, nature-technology, translation-communication, listening and understanding …
This installation is used to question the borders of speciesism and anthropocentrism. The device invites individuals to think about our lives, for placing biodiversity at the heart of our relationship to the environment.

“Déjeuner sur l´herbe folle” by Margaus Ballagny et Jeanne Tresvaux Du Fraval

The residency would allow us to deepen the relationship between the social moment of the meal and the making of it at all levels of creation (growing produce, shaping of dishes and cutlery, etc.). This social event creates community; it makes a house. It is from this that new forms, both aesthetic and intellectual, can be born.
Playing with the imposed context of the confinement and enjoying our privileges of being self-sufficient in a green space, we are enthusiastic about the possibility of a self-sufficient autonomy. We will try to set up a lunch made exclusively with the foodstuffs collected on the ground.

“Colonne Filtrante ” by Lucas Macabéo

This project is a research on the porosity of ceramic and its use as a filter to sanitize rainwater. There are a variety of materials that filter water: wool, gravel, sand,
coal …
Among these materials, one of the most efficient is ceramic, frequently used in some countries to decontaminate waters using different mixtures of soil, pod powder, rice or sawdust. My research consists in combining different vegetable berries to the earth in order to vary its porosity, sometimes in very localized places of the object. This hanging filter column is an example of the application of this technique.
