BOISBUCHET RESIDENCY PROGRAMME

BRADLEY KERL

SEASON 2022

Bradley Kerl is a painter and arts-educator based in Houston, TX. His work is generally derived from his day-to-day life experiences and engages heavily with the history and materiality of painting and drawing. This open-ended approach allows for maximum exploration, invention and play with regards to subject matter and source material.

While in residence at Boisbuchet, Bradley translated his time wandering the extensive grounds and interactions with the endless stream of people into a series of 20 watercolour paintings.

“Truly a painter’s playground, the landscape of Boisbuchet offered me an endless supply of inspiration and touch-points to refer back to and build upon at my Houston studio.”

In addition to what may be considered a more straight-forward, landscape-based approach to painting, Bradley also sought to expand upon his reoccurring body of work with the inclusion of text in many of the works. Translations of basic vocabulary, phrases, snippets of conversations and song titles, sometimes embedded or camouflaged into the landscape and other times more overt, feature strongly across the series of paintings.

The work Bradley made at Boisbuchet serve as a sort of time-capsule or love letter to the time spent fully immersed in the unique environment and landscape of the Domaine.
