BOISBUCHET RESIDENCY PROGRAMME

LUCÍA GROMPONE

SEASON 2020

Lucia Grompone is a product and industrial designer from Uruguay, currently working as Technical Product Designer in the innovation team at Ravensburger Games, a toy company based in Ravensburg, Germany. She has previously worked as a product designer at denwerk GmbH and their idea lab, thinx. As a designer, Lucia seeks to merge objects together to find functional solutions through new typologies. In addition to design, Lucia has also developed a distinctive style in illustration, which she applies both within the commercial and artistic realm, from exhibitions, children’s books, stage designs and wallpaper to textiles and teabags. Lucia has been to Boisbuchet twice before, having originally participated in the workshop, Back to Basics, in 2009 and returning the following year to join the Corning Museum of Glass in their workshop, Liquid Fusion.

“Boisbuchet provided me the perfect frame to experiment.”

Lucia returned once more to Boisbuchet for two weeks to focus on her illustrative work and try something new other than the more design-oriented work she has done at Boisbuchet in the past. During the residency, she developed her small-scale watercolour illustrations in the bamboo Conference Pavilion into larger pieces made with fabric and watercolour, with the line work developing into stitching. In her illustrations, Lucia created her own world, with each country and island, defined by maps and flags, having its own traditions, language, and history.

Following on from the residency, Lucia will continue to work on this narrative and develop its idea of national and cultural identities in her signature illustrative style.

“In Boisbuchet you are working, and you look up, and wow! everywhere you look you find an inspiring place or detail!”
