Scale it down. Design in miniature

July 17th – July 23rd 2022

The Workshop

During this workshop, each participant will design their own furniture collection. We will experiment with lots of techniques and materials to study design…in miniature.

In my work, every design process starts with making scale models from scrap, wood, cork, stone, metal and many other materials to study, reflect and develop quick results. It is a way to train my brain into design thinking through spontaneous hands-on methods.

A smaller scale brings a lot of freedom to the process, yet doesn’t mean it is less realistic: every obstacle that you face in miniature definitely occurs also in a larger prototype. Smaller-scale models and tryouts are a crucial stage in communicating my work method. Throughout my whole design career, I have been using these models for presentations, development and exploration.

We will be working hands-on with experimentations and different techniques such as bending, oxidising, vacuum forming, laminating, upholstering and many more. As a final step, your collection will also be contextualised and we will create this context: a scenography, a space or a setting.

I will also bring my own scale models to show how I work and what all my steps in a design process are.

This workshop is about discovering and discussing design methods, techniques and theory.

He does not hide his designs under indirect layers but reduces them to their very essence.
