Waste Full Future

July 10th – July 16th 2022

The Workshop

My relationship with waste is about seeing the potential that already exists. The ability to transform something deemed single-use into multi-functional. To create a conversation around sustainability and tackle the seriousness of the subject through nostalgia and curiosity.

This course will utilize waste as the foundation for what we build and a means to challenge ourselves, not only as creatives but also as consumers.

Creation is also a matter of language and the challenge of upcycling is to operate an unexpected translation of materials, functions, contexts and meanings. While experimenting with garments, handcrafted or industrially produced objects, technological devices or food, we will question the value we put on materials as we take them apart and look to imbue what many deem worthless as something of value as we put them back together.

Throughout an intensive week of outdoor and indoor activities, conversations, a lot of cutting and stitching, we will learn the basic principles of sustainability and upcycling and push our adaptive boundaries.

Are we as multi-functional as the waste itself? We'll soon find out.

While sustainability is often used as a marketing buzzword because of its PR value, Nicole’s accessible, witty, and functional practice serves as a reminder that sustainability is actually an operational philosophy.
