Winners of the Boisbuchet Residency Award 2021

Over the past week-end, the jury of Boisbuchet’s Residency Award made up its mind and selected two different projects as this competition’s winners. Congratulations to them! And thank you all for your submissions.  Now is the time to develop your projects at Boisbuchet.

“A bio-inclusive exploration with mycelium” by Miriam Josi and Stella Lee Prowse

What might the mycelium want from us? What does the mycelium want us to want? Instead of isolating the organism, the aim of Miriam Josi and Stella Lee Prowse is to embrace its interrelationships, in order to imagine new ways of making that benefit the more than human world. With this inquiry, they will apply their ‘bio-inclusive’ (Matthews 2011) design methodology grounded in holistic observation, exploring the full potential of mycelium and local resources, through reciprocal collaboration.

“Mush” by Margaux Padrutt and Marion Payet

The mycelium must be mixed with substrates in order to create a compact surface that can be later used to make objects. These substrates are natural elements that which will allow the mycelium to grow. It will feed and connect to its living organisms to form a single block that can be worked with a mold.

This biomaterial can become an alternative to plastic, but not only. It has fireproof properties like concrete, buoyancy like wood and can be versatile like steel or plastic depending on how it is worked.

For this call, Margaux Padrutt and Marion Payet propose Mush. A table lamp directly inspired by the mushroom. It is designed with a biomaterial based on mycelium of oyster mushroom (roots of the mushroom) and sawdust.

1. Oyster mushroom
2. Mushroom mycelium
3. Sawdust
4. Mixture of mycelium and sawdust which is transformed
