BOISBUCHET RESIDENCY PROGRAMME

INEZ TULLY

SEASON 2022

Inez Tully is a collage artist based in Brighton, UK. Her practice uses colourful paper to document her thoughts and feelings to create a sense of place.

In Inez’s practice she is inspired by natural landscapes and while at Boisbuchet she wanted to create collages from the compositions she found in nature. Inez created small drawings at first, and then took photographs of compositions that she liked as she didn’t want to remove anything from nature. She was mainly interested in the shadows cast by trees and fallen branches.

Inez chose to keep them in the sketchbook to create a collection of collages that when viewed felt like you were reading a diary. A diary that documents how she interacted with the landscape. The colour palette was limited to 5 colours that were mostly blue. These colours were chosen before Inez arrived at Boisbuchet. Before making any collage, Inez thinks about what the colours will be. As her work is rooted in feelings, Inez uses colours that are emotive and are chosen intuitively.

Originally it was just going to be the collages. But after seeing the broken tiles in the workshop, Inez decided it would be a good idea to make them into a 3D collage. She liked the idea that because they’re moveable you could make a collage anywhere. She photographed the tiles on a variety of different backgrounds and decided to photograph them against shadows to connect them to the collages.

“I applied to Boisbuchet because I wanted to reconnect with my practice and spend the time developing my voice as an artist.”
