Crooked Lines

August 20th – August 26th 2023

The Workshop

This workshop is about drawing some parallels (or rather crooked lines) between creation in nature and our own (un)systematic hand in the creative process. Nature probably has no fixed idea of where it is going, what form it will take or when it will stop evolving. And do we know it for ourselves?

We want to ask questions about the internal and external forces that shape our imagination, about how nature reacts to sudden external changes, and about the influence of time on the form of things. To what extent can we let our rational impulses be guided by uncontrolled processes and irregular materials, such as wood?

We'll start with an observation of nature: the forms a root, a branch or a leaf have taken, the structures of a tree's bark, a field of grass or the lake's surface in the wind. After our common search for these traces and forces, we set to work individually or in teams to break down the physical material and explore new methods and aesthetics.

Our work may lead to the creation of furniture or other objects of use, to furnishing, architecture or new paths for people and animals, our minds or the rainwater. But that is much less important than our experiences with material through touch, work and time and the lessons we take away from it.
