Twisting and Twining

August 28th – September 3rd 2022

The Workshop

Rattan is a humble material, but extremely rich in shades.

In this workshop, we will work with this ecological, vegetal wood-like fibre to produce a collection of outdoor furniture.

Obtained from the processing of certain species of climbing palms mostly found in Asia and Africa, rattan is fine, durable, sturdy while visually lightweight. Similar materials, such as wicker, esparto and cane, have been used since ancient times, especially in the rural environments, to produce both decorative and daily-life functional objects, such as baskets, espadrilles, mats, and seats. It has long been widely used in the field of design too.

We will focus on rattan’s properties and explore all the different ways and possibilities to work with it, pushing it to its limits. Our hands will be very busy in weaving and bending, twisting and twining (with the help of a steamer at our side to shape our ideas).

The natural environment of Boisbuchet will certainly be an inspiration to pour into our human-made design the seeming imperfection of nature with its organic and irregular shapes, shadows, reflects and textures.

The results of this workshop won’t simply create the perfect ambience for the very last Friday night in Boisbuchet, but will then travel to Valencia to be exhibited at our studio on the occasion of the VWDC (Valencia World Design Capital).

MUT is a design studio founded in 2010 by designer Alberto Sánchez and Eduardo Villalón.

MUT Design Studio is formed by a multidisciplinary team. Their inspiration comes from nature and the apparently prosaic objects making up the puzzle of their daily life, always true to the principles of emotional design. Experimenting with those everyday objects in order to redefine them is one of their bred-in-the-bone hallmarks. Thanks to their independent personality, MUT have turned into a design icon.

Their award-winning products are regularly featured in the pages of top leading magazines around the world and at the present time they are listed among the most popular and highly regarded designers of their generation. In 2020 they were invited as guests of honour to create the prestigious “Das Haus 2020” in the international fair IMM Cologne. MUT collaborates with and international companies, such as Pulpo, ex.t, Sancal, Gan, Diabla, Preciosa, Expormim, Gandia Blasco, by Interiors, Antonio Lupi, Missana, Archiproducts, Nunna, Harmony among other clients.

In 2021 they designed the Valencia Pavilion for the WDC 2022 Valencia, presented for the first time during that year in Madrid.
