We Make Space

July 31st – August 6th 2022

The Workshop

This workshop is about handling with material and immaterial, together, in space.

My design practice is often defined as an assemblage. It is my reply to the complexity of the world surrounding, its paradoxes and yet its harmony. I try to create without any prior judgment or established hierarchies, expressing my endless curiosity for all kind of materials, for how things are made, and tracing my trajectory among past, present and future narratives in a non-linear journey.

When juxtaposing two objects, there is always a gap. This gap is changeable. It can be very small, almost null, either can expand, leading to another type of relationship. We can call this gap “space”. The same happens with us: we can seek for proximity and contact, choose dialogue or fight, either we can look at each other at a distance. All interactions are acceptable. The spatial gradient we choose depends on what we want to create and how we want to live, even if temporarily, together.

In this week-long workshop, we will find our configuration in space and reflect on the design method while seeking for it. A disciplined chaos. A lucid anarchy. We will forget about what we think design is, what objects should look like, or any preconceived ideas about beauty or functionality. We will train our capacity to work with the fear of the unknown, to accept risks, to trust the void. We are allowed to make all the possible mistakes.

We will decide how to assemble materials – both man-made and natural-made, processed or raw – that Boisbuchet has to offer, together with our personal stories. Our working sessions will combine expeditions in the wilderness, one to one exercises as well as collective conversations and making. We will create a space where we feel free to create whatever-however. And this space will then be ours.

Kostas Lambridis (1988) lives and works in Athens.

After graduating from the Department of Product and Systems Design Engineering of the University of the Aegean at Syros, in the Cyclades archipelago, he moved to the Netherlands to work in the studio of Nacho Carbonell, gaining important work experience over a span of eight years. In the same period, he studied in the master program in Contextual Design at the Design Academy of Eindhoven, taking a degree cum laude in 2017. His thesis project, titled “Elemental Cabinet”, brought international visibility and made him part of the ranks of new rising designers of his generation.

After returning to Greece, he opened his own studio. He takes an active part in the production of his works by hand, due to his interest in materials and construction techniques, developing original theoretical research on the meaning of these operations.

With his work he has taken part in various group exhibitions, including shows held in the prestigious contexts of Fondation Cartier in Paris and Carpenters Workshop Gallery, whose Parisian facility hosted his first extensive solo show in 2021.
